Pizza Party! Whole Wheat Chia Seed Dough Recipe

I used to think that making your own dough for bread, pizza, tortillas or anything else that uses dough seemed like a very daunting task. I never really tried because 1:  I’ve never considered myself a very good “baker” 2:  what’s up with all of that rising and waiting? and 3:  I follow directions terribly, I add things here and there to recipes to make it a bit healthier or easier.  Well I’m so glad I’ve begun trying out my hand at baking because it’s really not that hard.

I love knowing that my family is getting real ingredients and not stabilizers, preservatives and other junk that allows foods to live on shelves for years.  This recipe was amazing, the kids were even eating just the pizza crust before I could get them to decorate it for the pictures. I’m sure people would laugh if they heard some of our meal time dialogues…”Evy and Luca don’t eat that yet, wait ok eat it, hold it right there and ok go, put it in your mouth and stop, and…wait wait do that again, oh crap the dog just ate the toppings”

I made sure to cook all of the toppings that needed cooking to safely eat, so if the kids snacked while building their pizzas that was totally ok. I used chicken sausages, frozen peas, corn, tomatoes, pears and cheese for the toppings. And the crust was super easy too. Evy even helped. Even though we had a few holes in the dough when spreading it out, we patched them up and it still turned out delish.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1/3 whole-wheat flour

  • 2 tbsp chia seeds

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 3/4 cup whole milk

  • 3 tbsp olive oil

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 F / 200 C.
  • Mix together all of the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Add in milk and olive oil and keep mixing till combined. Form into a ball and place a tea towel over it in a warmish place for 10 min. I used this time to dice, shred and cook my toppings.
  • When the 10 minutes are over, roll the dough out on a floured surface then press it into a cookie sheet or just into circles works too. I used my fingers to really press it out and squish it into the edges to make it quite thin since it will rise a little when you bake it and I prefer a thinner crust. But this is up to you.
  • Bake the crust for 10 minutes then let the kids go wild with their favorite toppings. Put it back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes or until the veggies are cooked and the cheese is melted.
