Founder Jeff Patterson is an inventor, designer, visual artist, and environmental activist. As he became more aware of the tremendous amount of waste of paper products, he connected it to the destruction of indigenous forests and the abuse and exploitation of animals for their coats, ivory, and skins. He immediately connected with the desire to study, research, and accumulate knowledge about how this impacts the environment and began to search for ways to help. Jeff decided that activism wasn’t enough and he needed to take action, so he created First World.
Based out of Portland, Oregon, First World was created in order to restore balance back to our natural resources. With the goal of being in harmony with the environment, this company focuses on products made from recycled paper and specialty papers such as stone paper (an amazing material that is environmentally friendly, durable, non-toxic, recyclable, and can withstand water, grease, and dirt). Jeff learned that as the amount of paper being thrown away keeps rising, so are the number of trees being destroyed to make it. He wanted to make use of the millions of tons of paper thrown away every single year.
All printing is done with non-toxic and vegetable-based ink, and all products are designed in a way that minimizes waste. As the company has expanded over the years, they began to combine paper with other organic material such as Jute, Organic Cotton. Bamboo, and Hemp to create Tote Bags, Jute Paper Craft Greeting Cards and Note Cards, Holiday Post Cards, and more. These beautiful products are eco-friendly, durable, and produced with sustainable materials that you can feel good about. The First World website is also designed for educational purposes. Their goal is not only to reach consumers and raise awareness, but also to make corporations, energy companies, and politicians aware and accountable for their actions. The company also would like to encourage everyone to think of future generations, and the world we’re leaving behind.
