Named for owner Michelle Lee’s rural roots that reach back to Pendle in Lancashire (famous mostly for witches), The Pendle Wick was formed on a rainy Autumn afternoon. Michelle was reading her favorite book (Witches Abroad, a Discworld Novel – Terry Pratchett) and was feeling a bit homesick after visiting her family in the UK; so she lit a candle. Michelle believes that candles bring us joy, or Hygge (a Danish word meaning a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment), and she pours this into each of the candles she creates.
Michelle’s goal is to create scents that evoke memories; much the same as when a song comes on the radio and transports us to another place and time. A personal favorite of hers is the Witch’s Cottage. This one combines gingerbread cookies and vanilla frosting, and transports her back to baking cakes with her Nanna Nellie as a little girl. Nothing makes Michelle happier than the thought of someone opening the candle tin or jar, the smell wafts out, and they are reminded of someone or something that brings them joy.
Working with Michelle has been an absolute pleasure. You can feel how much she truly cares and is so passionate about what she does with each interaction, and I am not exaggerating when I say that these are the best smelling candles I have smelled IN MY LIFE! I received The Witch’s Brew, The Basic Witch, and the Witch’s Roast, and it is nearly impossible to pick a favorite. For you coffee lovers out there the Witch’s Roast literally smells like fresh coffee beans with a hint of cream and sugar (my son absolutely loves this one). If you love the fall and everything pumpkin spice, The Basic Witch will blow your mind! This one might be my favorite. It is sweet and comforting and feels like a hug for your senses. The Witch’s Brew has a beautifully sweet, almost fruity, black tea scent. These magical hand poured candles sure have cast a spell on my family!
Not only is Michelle an absolute delight as a person; she genuinely cares about supporting small businesses AND has committed to donating $1.50 from every candle sold to a charity called Mary’s Meals (www.marysmealsusa.org), where just $24 helps to feed a hungry child for an entire school year. Her candles also smell absolutely fantastic and are made from non-toxic 100% natural soy wax from US grown soybeans (soy wax burns safer, longer, and cleaner than traditional paraffin wax, is biodegradable, and is a renewable resource). They contain no dyes or additives, are phthalate-free, and all containers are reusable and recyclable. By not adding any color to the candles, they have a beautiful, elegant appearance that is the perfect accompaniment for any decor.
Once she retires from the Royal Air Force and her husband retires from the US Navy, Michelle’s dream is to have her own brick and mortar store and for The Pendle Wick to be her full-time occupation.
