The Story Behind Sewindipity Bowtique’s Stylish, Comfortable, and Affordable Headbands

My name is Alexis: I am a military wife, “mompreneur”, and the creator & designer of everything Sewindipity Bowtique

When I was twelve years old my grandmother gave me my first sewing machine and taught me how to sew basic stitches. From there I practiced creating different things such as pillows, doll dresses, and patches. I didn’t realize just how much of an impact those small projects would have later on in my life.

Fast forward to 2017, when I graduated college with my Bachelors of Applied Science in Supervision and Management (B.A.S.S.M) degree. At the time I had no idea what I was going to do with my business degree. I had every intention of returning to Washington, finding a job, and making a life for myself.

In 2018 my husband and I were blessed with the news that we were going to become parents of a baby girl. The night of her birth, I realized that everything in my life was going to change. Here was this beautiful, perfect little girl that needed me, and I was determined to be her everything.

My husband is active duty military so we decided the best choice for our family was for me to stay home with our daughter.  This would allow me to simply concentrate on her. I didn’t want to miss a thing! I watched her grow from a tiny, helpless newborn to a strong, independent toddler. Every moment with her was, and still is, such a blessing!

As her first birthday approached, my husband was deployed and I began to get restless. I was eager to fill her nap times with some kind of purpose. It was then that the seed for Sewindipity Bowtique was planted. And on September 11, 2019 that seed finally took root and began to grow.

My goal in establishing Sewindipity Bowtique was to create stylish, comfortable, and affordable products that every woman could enjoy with only the finest materials to create one-of-a kind headbands! Every item is made up of a mixture of spandex and polyester fabric. It has a wonderful stretch, an excellent recovery, and is thick enough to maintain its placement, yet still provides breathability. Many of these fabrics are purchased from small businesses just like Sewindipity Bowtique, thereby allowing everyone’s dollar to reach just a little further.

Initially I opened Sewindipity Bowtique with the intention of designing Mommy & Me headbands for both mother and daughter. In the beginning I created headbands with sizes that fit every age, in fabric designs that ranged from holiday-theme to fun florals to crazy tie-dyes. However, I was forced to narrow down my inventory when the Covid pandemic began.

My father is a respiratory therapist in a hospital down in Florida. I also have many other family members who work in healthcare. Daily I would talk with them about what they were seeing, and during each discussion they would update me with just how awful this illness was becoming. My father went from simply wearing his scrubs to having to wear a face shield, eye protection, gloves, and a face mask. These connections gave me a very enlightened first-hand look at just how badly the healthcare industry was being hit.

I remember hearing a common frustration amongst friends and family about the friction sores that the face masks were causing behind their ears after wearing them for long periods of time. I knew there were products out there similar to my headbands that seemed to give hope to a relief from these ailments; however, they always seemed too good to be true. Common complaints for the other products were that they were too flimsy, kept slipping, were too tight, or too thin.

My family kept telling me, “You need to put buttons on your headbands!” And I remember being so scared because I had never actually sewn buttons before. It wasn’t until my friend Kyler messaged me and told me to think about offering headbands with buttons that I finally gave in and went for it. And I am so glad that I did!

I chose a larger button than most of the other products I witnessed. The larger buttons provide more security for home-made masks that may use something other than the typical elastic as an ear loop.  (I do also have smaller buttons available. I’ve had customers special-request those because they are a lower profile than the bigger buttons.)

I aim to place the buttons in the middle of the headband. This way the wearer can choose how they want to wear their headband, either with the knot on top of their head or with the flat side on top. Either way their masks will fit comfortably around their face and off their ears without unnecessary pulling.

The quality of our fabric though, is definitely the highlight that I believe sets us apart from the rest! There is no elastic in the headband itself (another big difference between my headbands and others), instead the spandex is woven into the material providing enough of a stretch to fit comfortably around the head without slipping.

Because of my personal awareness of everything our front line workers were facing, I chose to offer a $10 off special for nurses and grocery store employees. I received so much incredible feedback! People were so grateful and complimentary towards my products. Here are just a few of the many reviews I received:

“I bought 11 headband(s) for myself and my coworkers recently. We were getting sick of the ear pain from wearing masks all day at work. Everyone loved them! She initially didn’t have enough for all of us in the style we wanted but she quickly got the fabric and sent us the batch within a few days. She had great lines of communication the whole time. Overall, great customer service experience. We will definitely be getting more headbands from SewindipityBowtique. 🙂 ”.

“My ears thank you!!!! I’m a pharmacy technician and I have to wear a mask for nine hours, I have tried so many different masks hoping it would help my ears stop hurting but it didn’t. I decided to try these button headbands as a last ditch effort for relief and oh my god it’s like night and day!! Not only are they cute, but they’re so comfortable and useful!!!! Thank you so much!”

To date, I have sold over 1,900 headbands! Each product is cut, sewn, modeled, and packaged by me…with maybe just a little help from my husband!
