The path that led me to founding Laughing Tree Organics began a little later in my life. In my early forties I was a full-time working mom with a hectic schedule. That meant mealtime was often whatever was easy, quick, and included a vegetable. Our “Brady Bunch” blended family included five growing children, so I always bought in bulk- from laundry detergent to body wash. I rarely read ingredient labels apart from the callouts on the front. If the packaging of common names boasted “healthy” or “essential nutrients”, it was good enough for me.
Then one day during a routine checkup, my nurse practitioner discovered a lump on my neck. How could I have missed it? How long had it been there? I was petrified. Eventually I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, a disease which causes one’s immune system to attack the thyroid gland.
The thyroid regulates metabolism, and as part of the endocrine system, controls the production of hormones and their release. Everything from our growth and development to our moods, sleep, reproduction and tissue function — our very fabric — is impacted by our endocrine system. My doctor informed me that Hashimoto’s is the result of genetics and environment. I left her office thinking, environment? I live in an unpolluted, somewhat-rural area, surrounded by forest! That night, I began researching the disease and environmental impacts. This was the very first step to completely changing my life, and my family’s.
The more I read about pesticides, plastics, and the harmful chemicals that go into all of the products that we use, especially beauty and personal care products, the more horrified I became. Toxic substances like parabens, phthalate, Cocamide DEA, Lauramide DEA, Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES), and heavy metals are common ingredients in our shampoos, soaps, creams, hair products, deodorants, make-up, and sunscreens. So many products with hidden toxins that I have been lathering on my body every single day of my entire life! I read as many research studies as I could find and became increasingly alarmed for not only myself and my children, but everyone and their children! Some of these nasty ingredients were linked to cancers, early-puberty triggers, an increased risk of diabetes, behavioral issues, just to name a few. I felt incredibly guilty.
Had I been poisoning my children? I was so angry.
Flash forward a few years and we had become organic, expert label readers. But with five active tweens I was left feeling a huge financial burden buying the kind of products that women in their forties need. Our skin loses elasticity, the production of collagen slows, while the wrinkles really start to show! My personal care budget was through the roof, and I was skimping out on some essentials. The natural moisturizer I was using cost nearly $100. The eye-serum I wanted was priced way out of reach. And, perimenopause was causing night sweats, so I was losing sleep and it was showing.
One morning, groggy at breakfast, my daughter asked me what was wrong and why my under-eyes were so puffy. I snapped, “Because the amount of food my kids eat means that I can’t afford my eye-cream!” She laughed and said, “If healthy skin products are so expensive, why don’t you just make them at affordable costs for others?”
